Summary

In this Chapter, you’ve been introduced to a few of the shareware , freeware, and commercial programs that are available for Mac OS X. You’ve learned about some great resources for finding software that fills your needs. You should now know some of the differences between shareware, freeware, and commercial software. While you are encouraged to distribute copies of most shareware and freeware (a sort of grassroots advertising campaign, if you will), authors generally retain copyrights to their software. Shareware authors ask that you send payment for products that you decide to keep, but freeware is free software.

While most of the utilities we’ve looked at are small programs designed to fulfill specific tasks, there are quite a few well-polished pieces of software that you’d be hard pressed to tell weren’t commercial offerings — Alfred, Cocktail, GraphicConverter, Transmit, or VLC to pick just a few. As the Internet has managed to provide a perfect, I-need-it-now software delivery model and commercial software houses are beginning to offer electronic-only downloads, the line between commercial software and shareware is blurring.
