Adding QuickTime Text Tracks

QuickTime lets you include multiple tracks in a single movie. One of these track types is the text track. Text can be used for credits, subtitles, title screens, or teleprompter text.

You can create text tracks very easily in any word-processor or editor that allows you to save as plain text (sometimes called ASCII text). If you use TextEdit, be sure to choose Format Make Plain Text (z-Shift-T). To create a text track, follow these steps:

  1. Create and save your plain text file.

  2. Copy the text to the Clipboard.

  3. In QuickTime Player Pro, position the playhead where you want the track to begin.

  4. Choose Edit Add (z-Option-V) to position the text file at that point, overlaying the image. The default duration for a text track inserted in this manner is two seconds. If you want a different duration, make a selection covering the duration and choose Edit Add Scaled (z-Option-V). The text track is added with each paragraph of your text file covering its own sequence of frames.

Occasionally, you might want something other than white text on a black background. You might want different colors to better coordinate with the movie frames. To adjust the text color, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose Movie Get Movie Properties (z-J) to open the Properties window for your movie.

  2. From the pop-up menu on the left, choose the text track.

  3. From the pop-up menu on the right, choose Graphics Mode.
