Workstations often present the biggest challenge to security administrators. Not only are there more workstations than any other network device, but many users are uneducated, or not concerned , about security issues. While it is relatively easy to block outside access to workstations within the network, it is a lot more difficult to prevent an attack from within, whether or not that attack is intentional. As with other parts of the network, the best path to workstation security is multipronged. Limit the access users have to the network and their ability to make configuration changes to the machine. Virus software should be run on every workstation as well and should be updated with new virus definitions on at least a weekly basis. By clamping down tight on workstation security, a lot of potential security problems can be averted before they happen. |
