Lessons Learned

  • Do not approach international projects in the same way as standard, one-location projects. Project leaders have to become aware of the differences and unique issues involved in international projects. The project coordinator can help in bringing new project leaders up to speed.

  • Consider pairing up a junior and senior project leader so that they can share information and skills. What is in it for the senior project leader? One thing is the ability to offload some of the routine work. Another is to have someone to share problems and issues with.

  • Have project leaders for international projects get together periodically to share information and notes regarding their projects. Before meeting, their issues and lessons learned could be shared to serve as a basis for the dialogue.

  • Collect focused lessons learned related to specific locations, methods, tools, technologies, and types of projects. This can be more valuable.

  • Ensure that no project leader is assigned to one location for too long. Rotation is important as the independence of the person is jeopardized if they stay in one place too long.
