Where to Learn More about Chaos
Chaos is one subject area within the field of nonlinear dynamics, which is part of the broader field of dynamical systems. There are many good books on chaos and hundreds of research articles published in journals each year. Some references, at different levels, that can lead you further into the mathematical details and the applications of chaos are the following:
1—
Introductory Level
The best selling book Chaos: Making a New Science by Gleick introduced the concept of chaos to many scientists and nonscientists. It provides a clear and accurate account of the basic ideas without the use of mathematics.
2—
Intermediate Mathematical Level
Chaotic and Fractal Dynamics by Moon provides a good introduction into the concepts of dynamic systems and their use in analyzing experimental data. The book shows the relevance of these concepts in many real life engineering applications. The mathematical level is that of ordinary differential equations.
3—
Advanced Mathematical Level
Nonlinear Oscillations, Dynamical Systems, and Bifurcations of Vector Fields by Guckenheimer and Holmes provides a mathematically rigorous introduction to dynamical systems. Chaos by Ott presents a mathematically rigorous introduction to chaotic systems and current research topics in a contemporary style.
4—
Chaos in Biomedical Research
A range of different biomedical applications are described by articles in the review Chaos, edited by Holden, and Complexity, Chaos, and Biological Evolution, edited by the Moskildes. Fractal Physiology by Bassingthwaighte, Liebovitch, and West provides an introduction to chaos at both a qualitative level and at the mathematical level of elementary calculus. It gives detailed descriptions and references of many biomedical applications of chaos.
