Special Characters

A few characters can be entered by name. This may be useful when the HTML file is to be sent over old mail systems or when your keyboard doesn't allow you to enter those characters in an easier way. For example, instead of "é," you can enter "é" (including the & and the ;). Here is a complete list:

A non-breaking space ( ) is exactly like a normal space except that it will never be broken at the end of a line. A soft hyphen () is an invisible mark in the text that indicates that a line may be broken at that point if needed, in which case it will expand to the appropriate type of hyphen to indicate that the word continues on the next line. A thin space ( ) is a space that is about half as wide as a normal space.

An em space ( ) is a space that is as wide as the em of the current font. An en space ( ) is half the width of an em space.

A zero-width non-joiner (‌) is an invisible mark between two letters to indicate that the two letters should not be combined visually. It can be used to avoid a ligature. In Western languages, it is almost never necessary. In some Oriental languages, it is more common. A zero-width joiner (‍) is the opposite. It combines two letters into a ligature that would otherwise not be combined.
