Click in the document where you want to insert a footnote (or select the text you want it to follow).
Open the Insert menu and select Reference, Footnote to open the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.
Click the Insert button to accept the default options of inserting a footnote with AutoNumber. Word places the cursor at the end of the page and numbers the footnote.
Type the text you want to appear in the footnote; when you're finished, click anywhere in the document.
INTRODUCTION
You can use footnotes to add comments and references to a document. You might use a footnote at the end of a page to tell the reader what the source of your information was. A footnote consists of the note reference mark and the corresponding note text, which are linked.
TIP
Viewing Footnotes
If you want to view footnotes (which are visible by default in Print Layout view), place the mouse pointer on the note reference mark in the document. The text you typed appears in a pop-up above the reference mark.
TIP
Endnotes
If you want to insert an endnote instead of a footnote, click the Endnotes option on the Footnote and Endnote dialog box. Endnotes are always displayed at the end of the document, never throughout, like you can with footnotes.
