scroll arrows

The arrows at either end of a scrollbar that you can click to scroll through your document.



scroll bar

A long bar that lets you move through your document with the mouse. Word provides a vertical scrollbar on the right side of the window and a horizontal scrollbar along the bottom of the window.



scroll box

The small box on a scrollbar you can drag along the bar to scroll in either direction.



search criteria

Defined patterns or details used to find matching records.



select

To define a section of text so you can take action on it, such as copying, moving, or formatting it.



selection handles

Small squares around the edges of a graphical image that indicate the graphic is selected.



serif

Fonts that have "tails" on the letters (for example, Times New Roman and Courier).



shortcut key

A keyboard combination that provides a quick way to execute a menu command. For example, Ctrl+S is a shortcut key for the File, Save menu command.



shortcut menu

A menu that pops up when you right-click an object. The options in this menu vary depending on the type of object you click.



slide

A single document or page in a PowerPoint presentation.



slide show

A visual presentation you can create with PowerPoint that uses text, graphics, and other effects. Use slide shows for business presentations, training presentations, and other tasks that require visual presentations.



slide transition

A special effect used to introduce a slide during a PowerPoint slideshow.



sort

A function that rearranges the data in a list so it appears in alphabetic or numeric order.



speaker notes

Notes that help you document and give a presentation in PowerPoint.



status bar

A place at the bottom of each Office window that tells you information about your documents and applications, such as whether you are in insert or overtype mode.



strikethrough

A font option in which the text is marked out with a series of dash marks (for example, strikethrough).



style

A named collection of formatting settings you can assign to text. For example, the Normal style might use the Times New Roman font at 11 points with standard margins.



submenu

A list of options that appears when you point at some menu items in Windows and in applications designed for use with Windows. A small, right-pointing arrowhead appears to the right of menu items that have submenus.



system tray

The area on the right side of the taskbar that displays the programs loaded into memory for use.
