Standardizing CV Format and Structure

All CVs included in a bid should have the same format and structure. This is especially important in bids from consortia and multi-professional groups. Standardizing these features has a number of advantages:

  • Consistent presentation builds an image of integration and competent organization.

  • CVs can be prepared more quickly and cost-effectively.

  • The task of regular and systematic updating is made easier.

  • Consistency helps in assessing the relative strengths of possible team members and selecting the individuals best suited to an assignment.

If there are external specialists or other firms associating with you in a bid, their CVs should - after consultation - be redrafted to secure consistency with whatever instructions the client may have given and uniformity with your own CVs. You may find that the external CVs offered to you lack an appropriately organized or focused structure. If so, do not use them just as they are: make sure you obtain the necessary information to bring them up to standard. It is in your interests to help improve the CV presentation of those professional colleagues who regularly associate with you in bids. At the same time, be careful not to straitjacket CVs into a structure that may not be the most effective presentation for a particular bid.
