Posting to Google Groups

One of the most popular areas on the Internet has been online social communities, such as Google Groups. Many other communities like Google Groups are available, including MySpace, YouTube, and Yahoo Groups. As an example, we focus on Google Groups here. With Google Groups, you can join others in restricted and public groups to discuss topics, share photos, communicate with friends , plan events, and perform other actions.

To access Google Groups, you must have an account established. Go to http://www.groups. http://www.google.com and click Sign Up For Google Groups. Fill out the Create An Account form and click the I Accept/Create My Account button at the bottom of the form. Once you create your account, Google takes you to the My Groups page, shown on Figure 25-10. Here you can set up your profile, which enables you to manage your subscription to any group on the site.

To find groups to join, use the Find A Group search box at the bottom of the page. Enter a topic and click the Search For A Group button. Google returns a list of categories and groups that fall under your search term. For example, the term "fitness" might return categories called Science and Technology - Biology, News, and Society, and return groups called rec. sport.rowing and Sports Medicine Article Digest. Click a link to review the group and join it. To join it, click the Subscribe To This Group link (see Figure 25-11) at the top of the page.

Answer the questions on the subscription page and click the Subscribe To This Group button. Some groups will immediately return you to the previous page as a member of the group. Others may send you e-mail asking you to confirm that you want to be a member.

While a member of a group, you can post messages to topics, read messages, create a new topic, view and post pictures (if the group supports them), and jump to related groups. To find out more about Google Groups, click the Help link at the top of a group page. This shows the Groups Help web page.
