Setting Up Area Code Rules

You can configure Windows to dial 1 and the area code automatically when necessary, but not to dial it for local calls.

What Are Area Code Rules?

In the old days, you probably had to dial 1 and the area code only for numbers outside your own area code. Now, you may have to dial 1 and the area code for some or all phone numbers, even within your own area code. You can tell Windows exactly when it has to dial what numbers , so when you type a phone number to dial, Windows can dial the correct sequence of digits. Windows stores this information as an area code rule , which defines what Windows should dial when calling from one dialing location to one area code (for example, when dialing 617 area code numbers from your Lexington, Mass, dialing location).

Creating Area Code Rules

To tell Windows the dialing rules for an area code:

1. Choose Start Control Panel, click Hardware And Sound, and click Phones And Modem Options. In the Phone And Modem Options dialog box that appears, click the Dialing Rules tab (if it's not already selected), as shown in Figure 23-3.

2. Choose the dialing location for which you want to create area code rules, click the Edit button to display the New Location dialog box (shown in Figure 23-4), and then click the Area Code Rules tab. You see a list of the area code rules that apply to calls made from that dialing location (the list starts out empty).

3. Click the New button. You see the New Area Code Rule dialog box, shown in Figure 23-5.

4. Type the area code to which this rule applies (that is, Windows follows this rule when dialing numbers in this area code from this dialing location).

5. In the Prefixes section, specify whether the rule appears to all numbers in the area code or only to certain prefixes (or exchanges-that is, the three digits that come after the area code). If the rule applies to certain prefixes, click Add and type the prefixes.

   Note  

   You can't tell Windows that a rule applies to all prefixes except the ones you list (which would be handy in some area codes).

6. If you must dial 1 (or another set of digits) for these phone numbers, click the Dial check box and type the digit (usually 1, which already appears there).

7. If you must dial the area code for these phone numbers, check the Include The Area Code check box.

8. Click OK to return to the Edit Location dialog box, where your rule now appears. Click OK again to return to the Phone And Modem Options dialog box.

You can change an existing area code rule (or delete it) by selecting the dialing location to which it applies from the Dialing Rules tab of the Phone And Modem Options dialog box, clicking Edit, clicking the Area Code Rules tab of the Edit Location dialog box that appears, clicking the area code rule, and clicking Edit or Delete.
