Chapter 10. Server Management API

The FlashCom Server installation includes an additional application that is used to administer the server and the installed applications. If you use the Communication App Inspector ( app_inspector.swf ) or the Administration Console ( admin.swf ), you are already familiar with some of the tasks that can be performed by the FlashCom Admin Service, which was introduced in Chapter 1. With the Admin Service, you can inspect all running applications, get vital statistics on the resources that the server and applications are consuming, and perform most of the server configurations. The Admin Service also gives access to the NetConnection Debugger as shown in Figure 3-3. The debugger can be used to see the messages sent across the wire to diagnose any problems.

Impressively, Macromedia provides a complete ActionScript API to the features of the Admin Service. This allows you to create administrative applications that run as Flash movies on the client. These applications are typically for testing and administration, but you can also access features that give powerful control over the FlashCom Server, applications, instances, and users. See Section 10.3 at the end of the chapter for more ideas.

Let's first see how to establish a connection. We'll explore more about what you can do with the Admin Service later under "Using the Server Management API."
