Section 5.7. Summary

5.7. Summary

Linux servers are a mainstay of the Internet. Since the creation of the robust open-source HTTPd package in the early 1990s, Apache servers have gained an increasing share of the server market with each passing year.

The Apache server is highly configurable: it can handle secure requests, encrypting all communications between the server and the client. This has made it a popular choice for ecommerce-related sites, which pass sensitive data across the Internet; it also plays well with other server-related components such as scripting languages and databases. A full complement of graphical tools for configuring the Apache server is supplied with Fedora Core.

In the next chapter, we'll look at the many tools available for administering and hardening your server. We'll also look at backups, logging, traffic reporting, and accessing your server remotely.
