Random Header

The Random Header plugin loads a different header image every time the page is loaded or refreshed (Figure 49). This adds variety to your site's pages.

Random Header was written by Kamiel Martinet and can be downloaded from www.martinet.nl/wp-site/random-header-plugin. That's also where you can see Random Header in action; the site's page header will automatically change each time you reload the page.

To install & use Random Header

1.

Open the randomheader Folder you downloaded. It should contain plugin file, a folder, and a readme file (Figure 50).

2.

Upload the randomheader.php file and the randomheader folder to the plugins folder in your blog's wp-content folder.

3.

Use an image editor to prepare some header images. Each image should be at least 760 pixels wide by 200 pixels high.

4.

Upload the header images to your theme's images folder; for example, wp-content/themes/default/images (Figure 51).

8.

In the Add new header image area, choose an image from the drop-down list (Figure 53). The picture is displayed beneath the drop-down list (Figure 54).

10.

Repeat steps 8 and 9 for each image you uploaded in step 4.

11.

View your blog and refresh or reload the page a few times. The header image should change randomly with each refresh.

Tips

  • You can learn the ID of the header element in your theme by consulting the style.css file for your theme. The header element is the style that contains the header image in its defintion. In many cases, this will be header.

  • To add additional images in the future, repeat steps 3, 4, 8, and 9. The new images will be pooled in with the ones originally added for display.

  • To remove an image from the header image rotation, click the Delete link beside it in the Header images area (Figure 55). This prevents the image from being displayed but does not delete it from your server.
