Creating a New Theme

Sometimes you might make enough changes to a theme that it becomes an entirely new theme based on the original. In that case, you could create a new theme with its own folder.

To create a new theme

1.

In Windows Explorer or Mac OS Finder, select the theme folder on which you want to base your new theme (Figure 24).

2.

Use the Copy and Paste commands (Windows or Mac OS) or Duplicate command (Mac OS) to duplicate the folder (Figure 25).

3.

Rename the duplicate folder (Figure 26).

4.

Open the style.css file in the new folder and edit the information at the beginning of the file to reflect your theme's name, URI, author, and other information (Figure 27).

5.

Modify the new theme's files to reflect your design ideas.

Tips

  • When naming files and folders for the Web, use only letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscore characters. Keep file names short.

  • The Theme Name and Description you enter in style.css displays in the Themes administration panel (Figure 6).

  • After installing and applying your new theme, you can create a screenshot of the home page of your blog, save it as screenshot.png, and place it in the theme's folder. This enables you to see a preview of the theme in the Themes administration panel (Figure 6). We explain how to install a theme earlier in this chapter.
