The Dictionary Channel

The Dictionary channel (Figure 37) enables you to get definitions and synonyms for words and acronyms. Enter the word you want to learn about and let Sherlock look it up on Dictionary.com.

To define a word

1.

Open the Dictionary channel (Figure 37).

2.

Enter the word or acronym you want to define in the Word to Define box.

3.

Click the magnifying glass button to look up the word.

4.

Wait while Sherlock looks up the word. After a moment, search results appear in the window (Figure 38):

  • The Dictionary list displays words that either exactly match what you entered or are related to what you entered. Select the word to see a definition in the box beside it.

  • The Thesaurus list displays synonyms for the word you selected in the list above it. Select a synonym to see more information and synonyms.

Tips

  • To look up one of the words in the Dictionary or Thesaurus list, double-click it.

  • If Sherlock can't find the word because you misspelled it (heck, I did it twice while experimenting!), the Spelling Suggestions list appears in place of the Dictionary list (Figure 39). Double-click a word in the list to look it up.
