The Internet Channel

You can use Sherlock to search the Internet for Web sites with information about topics that interest you. Unlike most other Internet search engines, Sherlock can search multiple directories (or search sites) at once. Best of all, you don't need to know special search syntax. Just enter a search word or phrase in plain English, select the search sites you want to use, and put Sherlock to work. It displays matches in order of relevance, so the most likely matches appear first.

Tip

  • Sherlock utilizes the search sites that are listed at the bottom of the Internet window (Figure 7). These sites may change.

To search for Web content

1.

Open the Internet channel (Figure 7).

2.

Enter a search word or phrase in the Topic or Description box near the top of the window (Figure 8).

3.

Click the magnifying glass button to begin the search.

4.

After a moment, the matches begin to appear. You can begin working with matches immediately or wait until Sherlock has finished searching (Figure 9).

Tips

  • When entering words in step 2, enter at least two or three words you expect to find in documents about the topic you are searching for. This helps narrow down the search, resulting in more useful matches.

  • To perform a new search, follow steps 2 and 3. A new results list replaces the original list.

To work with found sites

1.

Scroll through the list of items found (Figure 9) to locate an item that interests you.

2.

To open an item's Web page, double-click it. Your Web browser launches and displays the page in its window (Figure 10).

Tips

  • You can sort the items found list in the Sherlock window (Figure 9) by clicking one of its column headings. To reverse the sort order, just click the same column heading again.

  • To open a separate Sherlock window to perform a new search (without disturbing the items found list), choose File > New (Figure 11) or press .
