New & Improved Features in Word 2004

Word 2004 includes a number of brand new features, as well as improvements to some existing features. Here's a list.

New features

  • Paste Options button. When you paste text or an object into a document, Word displays the Paste Options button, which you can click to display a menu of options for the pasted content (Figure 1).

  • Notebook Layout view. The new Notebook Layout view (Figure 2) makes it easy to take notes and keep them organized.

  • Audio notes. You can now record sounds, including spoken notes, directly into Word. This feature works hand-in-hand with Notebook Layout view.

  • Office Toolbox. The new Office Toolbox is a palette with four panes of useful tools:

    • Scrapbook (Figure 3), which replaces the old Office Clipboard, enables you to store multiple selections of text or other objects for use in any Office document.

    • Reference Tools (Figure 4) includes a dictionary and thesaurus and buttons for searching Encarta Encyclopedia and MSN online.

    • Compatibility Report enables you to see how compatible your document will be with other versions of Word for Macintosh or Windows.

    • Projects offers access to the Project Center feature of Entourage.

  • AutoCorrect Options button. Each time Word's AutoCorrect feature is activated, you can point to the correction to display a menu of options for it (Figure 5).

Improved features

  • Navigation pane. Word's Document Map feature has been improved to offer two navigation views: the Document Map and Thumbnails (Figure 6).

  • Styles. Styles now appear in the Styles area on the Formatting Palette (Figure 7). This makes it easier to apply, modify, and add styles.

  • Change tracking. Word now displays changes in comment balloons that appear in the margins beside text (Figure 8).
