Anatomy of a Table

A table includes a variety of elements (Figure 16):

Figure 16. Table elements include column, row, and cell boundaries, end-of-cell and end-of-row marks, and, in this example, borders.

  • Column boundaries appear on either side of a column.

  • Row boundaries appear on the top and bottom of a row.

  • Cell boundaries are the portions of column and row boundaries that appear around an individual cell.

  • End-of-cell marks appear within each table cell. They indicate the end of the cell's contentsjust like the end-of-document marker marks the end of a Word document.

  • End-of-row marks appear to the right of the last cell in a row. They indicate the end of the row.

  • Table move handle enables you to select the entire table and drag it to a new position in the document.

  • Table resize handle enables you to resize the table by dragging.

  • Borders are lines that can appear on any column, row, or cell boundary. These lines print when the table is printed.

  • Gridlines (Figure 17) are lines that appear on any column, row, or cell boundary. Unlike borders, however, gridlines don't print.

Figure 17. When a table has no borders, gridlines can identify the boundaries.

Tips

  • To see end-of-cell and end-of-row marks, display nonprinting characters by enabling the Show/Hide ¶ button on the Standard toolbar. I tell you more about nonprinting characters and the Show/Hide ¶ button in Chapter 1.

  • The table move handle and table resize handle only appear in Page Layout view when the mouse pointer is on the table (Figure 16).

  • By default, Word creates tables with borders on all column and row boundaries. You can change or remove them using techniques discussed in Chapter 4.

  • You can only see gridlines on boundaries that do not have borders (Figure 17). In addition, the Gridlines option on the Table menu (Figure 18) must be enabled for gridlines to appear.
