Change Case

You can use the Change Case dialog (Figure 32) to change the case of selected characters. There are five options (Figure 33):

  • Sentence case capitalizes the first letter of a sentence.

  • lowercase changes all characters to lowercase.

  • UPPERCASE changes all characters to uppercase.

  • Title Case capitalizes the first letter of every word.

  • tOGGLE cASE changes uppercase characters to lowercase and lowercase characters to uppercase.

Tips

  • You might be wondering: If the Change Case command is under the Format menu, why is it being discussed with features under the Tools menu? Technically speaking, changing the case of characters with the Change Case dialog (Figure 32) does not format the characters. Instead, it changes the actual characters that were originally entered into the document. To emphasize this point, I decided to discuss it in this chapter, as a writing tool.

  • To change the case of characters without changing the characters themselves, use the All caps or Small caps option in the Font pane of the Font dialog (Figure 34). I tell you how in Chapter 3.

To change the case of characters

1.

Select the characters whose case you want to change.

2.

Choose Format > Change Case (Figure 35).

Tip

  • If you use the Change Case dialog to change the case of characters and get unexpected results, use the Undo command to reverse the action, then try the Change Case dialog again. I cover the Undo command in Chapter 2.
