Word Processing Basics

Word processing software has revolutionized the way we create text-based documents. Rather than committing each character to paper as you typeas you would do with a typewriterword processing enables you to enter documents onscreen, edit and format them as you work, and save them for future reference or revision. Nothing appears on paper until you use the Print command.

If you're brand new to word processing, here are a few concepts you should understand before you begin working with Microsoft Word or any other word processing software:

  • Words that you type that do not fit at the end of a line automatically appear on the next line. This feature is called word wrap.

  • Do not press at the end of each line as you type. Doing so inserts a character that signals the end of a paragraph, not the end of a line. Press only at the end of a paragraph or to skip a line between paragraphs.

  • Do not use to indent text or position text in simple tables. Instead, use in conjunction with tab settings on the ruler.

  • Text can be inserted or deleted anywhere in the document.

I tell you more about all of these concepts in this chapter and throughout this book.
