Views

Word offers several different ways to view the contents of a document window.

• Normal view (Figure 28), which is the view you'll see in most screenshots throughout this book, shows continuously scrolling text. It is the fastest view for entering and editing text but does not show page layout elements.

• Online Layout view (Figure 29) displays the contents of a document so they are easier to read onscreen. Text wraps to fit the window rather than margins or indentations.

• Page Layout view (Figure 30) displays the objects on a page positioned as they will be when the document is printed. This is a good view for working with documents that include multiple column text or positioned graphics, such as a newsletter or flyer.

• Outline view (Figure 31) displays the document's structureheadings and body textin a way that makes it easy to rearrange the document. Headings can be collapsed to hide detail and simplify the view. Working with Outline view is discussed in Chapter 12.

• Notebook Layout view (Figure 32), which is new in Word 2004, displays the document in a special format designed for taking and organizing notes. Working with Notebook Layout view is covered in Chapter 13.

Tips

• Although each view is designed for a specific purpose, you can work with a document in any view.

• The illustrations throughout this book display windows in Normal view, unless otherwise indicated.

To switch to another view

Choose the desired option from the View menu (Figure 33).
