Working with an Outline in Another View

You can switch to Normal (Figure 36), Page Layout (Figure 37), or Online Layout (Figure 38) view while working with an outline. There's nothing special about an outline except the additional outlining features available in Outline view. It's the same document when you switch to another view.

Tips

  • You can switch between any of Word's views at any time.

  • I explain how to switch from one view to another in Chapter 1.

  • Once the structure of a lengthy or complex document has been established in Outline view, you may find it easier to complete the document in Normal or Page Layout view.

  • In Normal, Page Layout, and Online Layout views, you can apply the Heading and Normal styles using the Style area of the Formatting Palette. Styles are covered in Chapter 4.

  • The Document Map lists all of the outline's headings (Figure 38). Double-click a heading to move quickly to that part of the document. You can show the Document Map in Normal or Online Layout view. The Document Map is discussed in Chapter 1.
