Rearranging Outline Components

Word's outline feature offers two methods to move selected outline components up or down:

  • Click the Move Up or Move Down button on the Outlining toolbar.

  • Drag heading or body text markers.

Tips

  • Rearranging outline components using these methods changes the order in which they appear but not their level of importance.

  • Either of these methods can be used to move a single heading or paragraph of body text, multiple headings, or a heading with all of its subheadings and body text.

To move headings and/or body text with toolbar buttons

1.

To move a single heading or paragraph of body text, click to position the insertion point within it (Figure 23).

or

To move a heading with its subheadings and body text, click the hollow plus sign marker to the left of the heading to select the heading, its subheadings, and its body text (Figure 22).

2.

To move the heading up, click the Move Up button on the Outlining toolbar. The heading moves one paragraph up.

or

To move the heading down, click the Move Down button on the Outlining toolbar. The heading moves one paragraph down (Figure 24).

To move headings and/or body text by dragging

1.

To move a single heading or paragraph of body text, position the mouse pointer over the hollow dash or small square marker to its left.

or

The mouse pointer turns into a four-headed arrow (Figure 25).
