“To say ‘well done’ to any bit of good work is to take hold of the powers, which have made the effort and strengthen them beyond our knowledge.”

—Philip Brooks, philosopher

STRONGER. HARDER. FASTER.

When your mother told you that “thank you” was a magic phrase, she wasn’t kidding. Just saying the words begins a process that amplifies employee abilities, commitment and motivation beyond belief.

Here’s how it works: when employees see managers using their valuable time and effort to honor them, it touches their egos. (Let’s be honest. Who doesn’t like to be recognized?) This “shared moment” of mutual respect builds an emotional connection between the supervisor and employee. Because of that connection, the employee is willing to do more for his manager. That, in turn, strengthens the corporate culture and enables the managers to deliver more to the company through the efforts of their employees.

And the process is never ending. As managers’ expectations of employees continue to rise, so does employee performance. And so on, and so on, and so on.

When you need a little magic, nothing—not abracadabra, open sesame! or even ala peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (for Sesame Street fans)— will do the job like a simple “thank you.”
