A day of tragedy brings out employee heroes.
Recognition is all about employees like Shawn Smith and Robert Djulus, shuttlers in Avis’s Toronto, Canada, location. They earned Horizon awards when, in the wake of September 11, they helped an elderly couple who returned their car and were trying to get back home.
Once the couple realized they were not going to be able to get a flight or hotel room, they were prepared to sleep in the airport. When the couple shared this story with Shawn and Robert, both men offered their homes to the customers. Ultimately, Shawn drove the couple to his home that evening and made arrangements for them during the course of the following day for hotel and airline flights as soon as possible.
Both Shawn and Robert showed superb customer service skills and compassion during that difficult time. Said F.Robert Salerno, Avis president, “They certainly showed the ‘We try harder “spirit.”
