Placing the Text

As mentioned in the preceding chapter, you can place a text file, or you can just type the text yourself inside InDesign. Add the body copy for the ad, and create a paragraph style using Adobe Caslon Pro Regular, 13.5-point text on 18-point leading, with Optical kerning turned on. Apply the paragraph style to the body text (see Figure 14.13). I used two text boxes, linked together to create the two columns.

The final element that has to be added is the headline. Use the Type tool to drag out a new text box, and type the words Relax. Revive. Refresh. Set the text to Adobe Caslon Pro Italic, 48-point text on 72-point leading, with Optical kerning turned on. Color the text black, set it to Align Right, and position it near the top right of the ad (see Figure 14.14). The ad is now done.

By the Way

If you're wondering why certain elements, such as the headline, are not on the master page, it's because InDesign always has master page elements at the bottom of the stacking order. If the headline were on the master page, the photograph would also be above it and you wouldn't be able to see the text.

Now that you've completed the first ad, save the file into your Version Cue project. Now you'll create the two other ads to complete the campaign, which will be quite easy because of how you set up the first ad. While still on page 1, switch to the selection tool (the black arrow) and choose Edit, Select All; copy all the contents with Command+C (Ctrl+C). Next, switch to page 2 of the document and choose Edit, Paste in Place. This pastes all the items into the exact position that they were in on page 1. For this second ad in the campaign, you want to use a different photo. If you'll remember, you specified the three photos you chose as alternates. Open the Links palette, and you'll see that InDesign identifies the file as having alternates (see Figure 14.15). Highlight the image that appears in page 2, and choose Alternates from the Links palette menu. Choose one of the other images for this ad and click Relink, which replaces the current image with the alternate version. Adjust or recrop the image as necessary. Repeat the process for the third ad in the campaign. You might need to reposition the text headline on each ad, depending on the image (see Figure 14.16). Save a version of the updated file to your Version Cue project.
