Setting Up Pages in InDesign

Launch InDesign and create a new file. In the New Document dialog box (see Figure 14.8), specify the following options:

  • Set the number of pages to 3.

  • Uncheck the Facing Pages option.

  • Specify a letter-size page (8.5 x 11) with an orientation set to Portrait (tall).

  • Set the number of columns to 2 and specify a gutter of 0.375 in.

  • Set your margins as follows: top, 7.5 in; bottom, 1.5 in; left, 0.375 in; right, 0.375 in.

  • Set your bleed to 0.125 all around.

By the Way

You might be wondering how I knew to set up all these specific options before even starting to design the piece. I'm psychic. The truth is, I started out with a letter-size document with default margin and column settings, and then made changes as I designed the piece using the Layout, Margins & Columns, and File, Document Setup settings. To make it easier to follow along, I've already given you the final settings, but when you're creating your own projects, you'll probably use the method I just described.
