Case Scenario Exercises

In the following scenarios, you must use what you have learned throughout the lessons in this chapter to answer questions based on a real-world scenario. Read each scenario, and answer the questions. If you have trouble, review the chapter and try again. You can find answers in the “Questions and Answers” section at the end of this chapter.

Scenario 3.1

Jessica calls the technical support line to report that she can no longer locate her messaging program. When you ask her to explain the problem in more detail, you discover that she believed the icon was taking up too much space “in the area of the taskbar where the clock is,” so she removed it by right-clicking and choosing Exit. Now she cannot find it and is afraid she has deleted it from her system. What is the problem, and how can it be resolved?

  1. Jessica completely removed the program from her system when she removed it from the notification area. Reinstall the component from the operating system’s CD-ROM.

  2. Jessica has exited the program but not uninstalled it. Because it is an application configured to start when Windows boots, you inform her that the only way to start the program again is to reboot the computer.

  3. Jessica must log on to the network domain so that the missing program files can be downloaded.

  4. Jessica removed the program icon and closed the program only temporarily. The icon can be added back to the notification area by rebooting the computer or by starting the program from the All Programs menu.

Scenario 3.2

After an upgrade from Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP Professional, a user reports that “the Start menu is too confusing and everything looks weird,” and he wants you to remove Windows XP and put Windows 2000 back on his computer. Knowing that you cannot do that because the company is upgrading all of its machines, which of the following can you do to make this user more comfortable with the new operating system?

  1. Change the Start menu type to the Classic Start menu.

  2. Disable Hide Inactive Icons.

  3. Use the Windows Classic theme.

  4. Do not show the Favorites, My Music, or My Pictures folders on the Start menu.

  5. In the Folder Options dialog box, select Use Windows Classic Folders.

  6. Use Classic View in Control Panel.
