Chapter 13: Configuring and Troubleshooting Applications


Overview

The Configuring and Troubleshooting Applications objective domain focuses on the configuration and troubleshooting of four main areas: Microsoft Office applications, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook Express, and the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. Windows XP provides a rich set of features for installing and configuring applications, as well as for working with them on a daily basis.

As a desktop support technician (DST), you must understand how to install Microsoft Office 2003 to suit user needs. You must be able to configure and troubleshoot each of the primary applications in Office, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. In addition, you should be able to set up and troubleshoot various types of e-mail accounts in both Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. You should also be able to configure and troubleshoot Internet Explorer.

Within the Windows XP operating system, you should be able to configure the desktop, Start menu, and taskbar to provide an environment suitable for users’ needs when running applications. You should also be able to troubleshoot these operating system features when problems occur. Finally, you should understand how to configure compatibility in Windows XP for older applications.
