Chapter 15: Configuring and Troubleshooting Hardware Devices and Drivers

Overview

The Configuring and Troubleshooting Hardware Devices and Drivers objective domain focuses on the skills that you need to be able to troubleshoot and assist users having problems associated with hardware devices and drivers. As management purchases additional peripherals for corporate users, such as display monitors, CD-ROM or DVD- ROM players, memory cards, and so on, you should be able to verify that the proper device drivers are installed and that the new hardware is correctly configured at all workstations.

You should know how to partition and format hard disks and configure various removable storage devices, such as CD-RW and DVD-RW drives. You should also understand how to configure and troubleshoot input/output (I/O) devices, such as modems, mouse devices, universal serial bus (USB)–connected devices, and wireless devices, as well as how to configure printers, keyboards, display monitors, and so on. You should have a good understanding of power options and how to apply them to laptop computers to enhance battery life, using the hibernation or standby features of Microsoft Windows XP Professional. You should also know how to create a hardware profile for company employees who might require one hardware configuration at the office and a different configuration at home.

The exam covers four areas relating to configuring and troubleshooting hardware devices and drivers: storage devices, display devices, power management (ACPI), and I/O devices.
