Tested Skills and Suggested Practices

The skills that you need to successfully master the Managing and Troubleshooting Access to Resources objective domain on the Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Microsoft Windows XP Operating System exam include the following:

  • Monitor, manage, and troubleshoot access to files and folders.

    • Practice 1: Right-click a folder while in Explorer, and select the Sharing and Security option from the drop-down menu. You should know how to change the share name and assign permissions to the folder. You should also be aware that you can assign multiple share names to the same folder and assign the same or different permissions to each share name.

    • Practice 2: Right-click My Computer, and select Manage from the drop-down menu. From the Computer Management MMC, expand Shared Folders and then select Shares. You should know how to view the folders that are being shared on a workstation or server, and how to access a shared folder using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) syntax.

  • Manage and troubleshoot access to shared folders.

    • Practice 1: If you have access to a network workstation, share a folder and try to access it using the Universal Naming Convention syntax: \\servername\sharename.

    • Practice 2: You should be able to tell what permissions are assigned to a shared folder by opening the Properties dialog box of the folder and clicking the Permissions button.

    • Practice 3: In Windows Explorer, map a drive by selecting Tools from the menu bar, and then selecting the Map Network Drive option. Select an available drive letter, and enter the path of the shared folder you created in the previous exercise.

  • Connect to local and network print devices.

    • Practice 1: Click Start and select Printers and Faxes from the menu. From the Printer Tasks section, select Add A Printer and follow the steps in the Add Printer Wizard. You should practice adding and connecting to a local and network printer using this utility.

  • Manage and troubleshoot access and synchronization to offline folders.

    • Practice 1: From a workstation running Windows XP Professional, click Start and then click the My Computer icon. On the Tools menu, click the Folders options and then click the Offline files tab. Select the Enable Offline Files check box.

    • Practice 2: Make a folder you created earlier available offline by right-clicking the folder, and clicking the Make Folder Available Offline option. You should also select the Automatically Synchronize The Offline Files When I Log On And Log Off My Computer option.
