Recovery Scenarios

This section describes recovery requirements and steps in the following scenarios:

  • Recovering Exchange Server 2003

  • Recovering an Exchange Server 2003 member server

  • Requirements for Recovering Exchange Server 2003

There are five common requirements for recovering all Exchange Server 2003 servers:

  • Windows Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2003 installation CDs. You’ll also need access to service packs and Hotfixes.

  • Full backups of the system drives.

  • Recent Windows Server 2003 system state backup.

  • Online backups of the Exchange databases. Offline backups will not help you in most scenarios.

  • A server object in Active Directory for the Exchange server you want to restore.

Recovering an Exchange Server 2003 Member Server

To perform a full recovery of an Exchange Server 2003 Member Server, follow these steps:

  1. Reinstall the Windows Server 2003 Operating System. Make sure the logical drives are configured the same as the original server and use also the same name of the original server. Finally, install the same components that were installed on the original server.

  2. Do not join the server to the domain. Leave the server in the workgroup. You will join the server to the domain by restoring the system state data.

  3. Restore the full drive backups to the server.

  4. Restore the System State data of the server. Following the restore of your system state, the event log might show that some Exchange Server 2003 services have failed (if the Exchange binaries were included in the full drive backups). If these services are not installed yet, when you restore the system state, Windows Server 2003 accepts that these services are installed on your server. These services will start after you install Exchange Server 2003 in disaster recovery mode.

  5. Install Exchange Server 2003 in Disaster Recovery Mode. This means running setup.exe with the disasterrecovery switch. This tells setup to not install the default Exchange installation set, but instead to look in Active Directory for an instance of the server that is already running.

  6. Restore the Exchange databases.

  7. If your Exchange server was running the Site Replication Service, first open Computer Management and under the Services and Application, click Services. Then select Exchange Site Replication Service from the list of services, and open its properties. Set the startup of the service to automatic and start the service. Note that this step must be performed before allowing the other Exchange services to start after running setup using the disasterrecovery switch. Restore the Site Replication Service (SRS) database to the Exchange 2003 Server.
