Understanding Storage Group Architecture

[Previous] [Next]

This section takes a look at some of the limits to storage groups and examines the purpose and role of each file that makes up the transaction logs. When you create a new storage group, a corresponding folder is created by default in the C:\Exchsrvr directory. Then, when you create a new mailbox or public folder store in that storage group, the files for that store are placed in the storage group's folder. The details pane in Figure 11-2 shows the default files that are created when you create a new mailbox store. The purpose of each of these files is as follows:

  • Edb.chk Checkpoint file
  • Edb.log Current transaction log
  • <Mailbox_store_name>.edb Rich text file
  • <Mailbox_store_name>.stm Native content file or streaming file
  • Res1.log First reserved transaction log
  • Res2.log Second reserved transaction log
  • Tmp.edb Temporary transaction log

You can see from Figure 11-2 that the total amount of disk space for the initial creation of one mailbox store is approximately 19.5 MB. As additional stores are created in the storage group, however, the amount of disk space needed is not as dramatic. For instance, notice in Figure 11-3 that additional stores have been created in the Tech Support Storage Group. There are two mailbox stores (MBX1 and MBX2) and two public folder stores (PFS1 and PFS2). However, there is only one set of transaction logs for all four of these stores. The only additional disk space required to create these stores is the space taken up by the stores themselves. Each storage group has one set of transaction logs, whether the group is housing one, two, or even six stores.
