Chapter 9

Sending and receiving information is the foundation of messaging, of groupware, and, of course, of Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. In this chapter, we start looking at the message transfer process within an Exchange system. Exchange 2000 Server is based on a multitude of messaging components, but with some analysis, it becomes apparent how these components interact to create an enterprise wide messaging system.

Recipients are objects in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory directory service that reference resources that can receive messages through interaction with Exchange 2000 Server. Such a resource might be a mailbox in the mailbox store where one of your users gets mail, a public folder where information is shared among many users, or even a newsgroup on the Internet.

No matter where a resource resides, however, a recipient object for that resource is always created within Active Directory on your network. One of your main tasks as an administrator is to create and maintain these recipient objects. Therefore, in addition to discussing mailboxes and message transfer, this chapter explains how to create and manage various types of messaging recipients; it also discusses tools that allow you to search for and organize recipients.
