Chapter 2 -- Understanding Exchange 2000 Server Storage Architecture

[Previous] [Next]

Chapter 2

The explosive growth in the number of e-mail users in the average corporate environment, together with the increasing complexity of the messages being transferred (containing, for instance, video, voice, and large graphics), have led to a dramatic increase in the size of many Microsoft Exchange 5.5 databases. It is not uncommon to find databases exceeding 20 GB. In this environment, a robust storage architecture is an absolute necessity. Exchange 2000 Server meets this need.

This chapter describes the storage architecture in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. It covers the database file structure, the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), the Installable File System (IFS), and changes in the way Exchange 2000 Server handles public folders. It also discusses indexing and how clients access Exchange 2000 Server stores, as well as the front end/back end server architecture.
