Several administrative duties must be performed on a Linux system to keep it running smoothly. Without them, files may be irrecoverably lost, utilities may become out of date, and the system may run slower than its potential speed. Many Linux installations are large enough that they warrant a full-time system administrator. Smaller Linux installations, such as your home system, do not.
