In this chapter, I will provide you with a general overview of the major Linux desktop environments, commonly used window managers, and the X Window System upon which they all depend. Entire books cover these subjects, and we can't hope to compete with that depth, but this chapter should give you a basic understanding, so that you can get started using the Linux desktop environment, and a good foundation of knowledge upon which to build.
