Chapter 8.  Java

8.6 Conclusion

In this chapter, we explored the Java language and platform. Java is of course important to anyone developing an Internet-enabled application, but it is especially important to those of us developing IEBI systems. Its implementation simplifies the development of applications that extend across the entire value chain.

Throughout this chapter, we discussed the features of Java and how they might be applied to IEBI. We traveled through the forest, examining the trees. Let us now pause on the hilltop overlooking the forest. Let us now look at Java as a complete entity. What we see is an environment rich in resources. The Java platform, in its various editions, digs down deeply into the very systems upon which the Internet is built, providing us with the ability to extend IEBI to such systems as servers, desktops, and even wireless devices. It also reaches up into the very top of our applications, providing us with JavaBeans and APIs to implement our IEBI systems. All of this is built in an object-oriented environment that abstracts the underlying structures, giving us the advantages of an architecturally neutral, portable, development environment.

Years ago, when I was a very young programmer, I was briefly employed at the Jet Propulsions Laboratories in Pasadena, California, working on the Deep Space Network. It was an interesting assignment, to say the least. While there, I witnessed the volume of coffee consumed by the staff who worked so long and diligently to develop these advanced systems. This was in the days long before boutique coffee shops and gingerbread latte. Back then, coffee was coffee: hot, black, strong, and quite often thick. Since then, I have often thought that man would never have made it to the moon if it weren't for the coffee. That was a long time agothe first foray into the New Frontier. We now have Java. One can only imagine where that will lead.
