6.3 IEEE 802 Specifications As we noted in the previous section, the ISO/OSI reference model is not a specification for a network protocol. The ISO standards body instead developed a model, or a framework, for components of a network protocol. The IEEE, however, did define such a specification with the IEEE Project 802. This specification addressed the two lower layers of the ISO/OSI model, the physical and data link layers . The following is a list of some of the IEEE 802 standards specifications:
