6.3 IEEE 802 Specifications

As we noted in the previous section, the ISO/OSI reference model is not a specification for a network protocol. The ISO standards body instead developed a model, or a framework, for components of a network protocol. The IEEE, however, did define such a specification with the IEEE Project 802. This specification addressed the two lower layers of the ISO/OSI model, the physical and data link layers . The following is a list of some of the IEEE 802 standards specifications:

802.1

System Management & Internetworking

802.2

Logical Link Control

802.3

Media Access Control/Ethernet

802.4

Token Bus

802.5

Token Ring

802.6

Metropolitan Area Networks

802.7

Broadband

802.8

Fiber Optic

802.9

Integrated Voice & Data

802.10

LAN Security

We will not examine these standards in any detail here. Later, when discussing how we communicate over the Internet, we will review the relevant standards. The rest have been included here so that we can understand the context in which they reside.
