Emerging Standards

The real power of XML is that it is extensible. Of course, this is also its problem: we could easily be faced with a cacophony of competing, idiosyncratic messaging structures. Fortunately, there are standardization efforts underway. Some of these simply attempt to describe a basic, extensible message structure, others deal with issues such as service discovery, orchestration of message exchanges, distributed repositories, etc.

In Appendix C, we will examine a sample of the efforts now underway. Few of these at present define an explicit model for access using JMS much of the momentum here is in the emerging web services arena, which emphasizes the use of HTTP as a lightweight transport. However, many of these efforts will `ultimately support bindings to Message-Oriented Middleware (MOM) systems, particularly through the JMS API. In the meantime, some of these efforts particularly those defining basic message formats are mature enough to serve as the basis for JMS messaging now, with only a few relatively safe assumptions. The point of this section is twofold: to bring your attention to what may be important future protocols in the messaging world; and to serve as an inspiration for your own messaging definitions if you cannot align to the standard immediately. It is always better to take advantage of existing experience that to try to reinvent from nothing.
