1. | Open the Yellow Door photo.

2. | Select the Crop tool from the toolbox.
|
3. | Press the Shift key and drag to draw a square crop from the bottom to just below the top of the image, centering the composition on the vertical dark space between the doors. Double-click in the selection to apply the crop.
|
4. | Select Gradient Map from the Adjustment Layer pull-down menu in the Layers palette.
|
5. | Double-click the gradient strip in the Gradient Map dialog box to launch the Gradient Editor.
|
6. | Double-click the white color stop beneath the gradient strip in the lower right to launch the Color Picker.
|
7. | Select a bright-red color, entering the RGB values R158, G35, B35.
|
8. | Double-click the black color stop beneath the gradient strip in the lower left to launch the Color Picker.
|
9. | Select a brown color, entering the RGB values R96, G72, B48.
|
10. | Highlight the mask icon in the Gradient Map layer.
|
11. | Select the Brush tool from the toolbox with a 20-pixel soft brush, and set the foreground color to black.
|
12. | Click once at the top of the dark strip between the doors. Hold down the Shift key and click again at the bottom of the dark strip, creating a vertical linear mask.
|
13. | Touch up any irregularities in the mask shape as necessary.
|
14. | Select Curves from the Adjustment Layer pull-down menu in the Layers palette. Double-click the layer name and rename it Curves Layer.
|
15. | Add two points to the curve, with values of Input: 77, Output: 55, and Input: 175, Output: 225.
|
16. | Choose Window, Brushes to launch the Brushes palette.
|
17. | Click in the Brush Tip Shape section on the left side of the dialog box and set the Brush Tip diameter to 231. Leave the other settings at their defaults.

18. | Enable the Shape Dynamics check box to activate this section. Set the Size Jitter slider to 40% and set its associated Control menu to Pen Pressure (ignore this setting if you're not using a drawing tablet).

19. | Enable the Dual Brush check box to activate this section. Select the Soft Round 200 brush from the brush thumbnails.

20. | Enable the Other Dynamics check box to activate this section. Set the Opacity Jitter slider to 10% and set its associated Control menu to Pen Pressure (ignore this setting if you're not using a drawing tablet).

21. | Select New Brush Preset from the Brushes palette menu and name the brush you've just created Digital Brush in the dialog box that appears. Click OK to save the brush.

22. | Click the Create New Layer button in the Layers palette to create a new layer. In the dialog box that appears, name the new layer Drawing.
|
23. | Select the Brush tool from the toolbox and choose the Digital Brush preset from the Brush Preset Picker.
|
24. | In the Options bar, set the Opacity slider to 21%.
|
25. | Draw with gestural marks that increase in pressure. Undo or erase as necessary until you achieve the desired result.
