The Layers Palettes

1.

Open the Madonna file.

2.

Select the Crop tool from the toolbox.

3.

Press the Shift key and drag to draw a square crop from top of the Madonna's head to just below the swords. Double-click in the selection to apply the crop.

4.

Select Curves from the Adjustment Layer pull-down menu at the bottom of the Layers palette.

5.

In the Curves dialog box that appears, create three points, set to Input: 72, Output: 0; Input: 121, Output: 24; and Input: 207, Output: 130.

6.

Set the Foreground color to black, select the Brush tool with a 200-pixel brush, and set the Opacity to 35%.

7.

Paint the mask into the face area to lighten it.

8.

Select New Layer Group from the Layers palette menu.

9.

In the dialog box that appears, name the new group Tone Adjustment Set.

10.

Select Duplicate layer in the Layers palette menu, and drag the Madonna layer to the Tone Adjustment Set group.

11.

Select Curves from the Adjustment Layer pull-down menu in the Layers palette.

12.

In the Curves dialog box that appears, create one point set to Input: 187, Output: 134.

13.

Select Color Balance from the Adjustment Layer pull-down menu in the Layers palette.

14.

In the Color Balance dialog box that appears, apply the following settings: Shadows -6, +5, +10; Midtones -4, +6, 0; and Highlights +23, +8, -6.

15.

Highlight the Tone Adjustment Set in the Layers palette and Option-click (Alt-click in Windows) the Create Layer Mask icon.

16.

Select a large feathered brush with white as the foreground color and an Opacity setting of 18%. Paint around the face to erase the mask.

17.

Open the Assumption of the Virgin photo.

18.

Select View, Show, Grid to turn on the grid overlay.

19.

Double-click the Background layer of the Assumption photo. Click OK in the resulting dialog box to convert that layer from the Background layer to a standard layer.

20.

Press -A (Ctrl-A in Windows) to select the entire image.

21.

Select Edit, Transform, Warp to launch the Warp dialog box.

22.

Drag the intersection point in the upper-left corner further to the left, correcting the distortion on the left column. Press Enter to apply the correction.

23.

On the left edge, select the two middle points and Shift-drag them to the left to correct the perspective and line the left column up with the grid.

24.

Select the lower-left point and drag it left and downward to align the bottom molding and the vertical column.

25.

Select the modified Assumption image and copy/paste it into the composite image file as a new layer, independent of the Layer group.

26.

Highlight the new layer name in the Layers palette and name it Altar.

27.

Select the Move tool from the toolbox and Shift-drag the pasted layer into position.

28.

Select the Wand tool from the toolbox, set the Tolerance to 44, and click the red garment of the figure in the lower-right corner.

29.

Choose Select, Similar to select all the red in the image, based on the 44 Tolerance setting.

30.

Option-click (Alt-click in Windows) the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers palette to hide everything except the red spots and brushstrokes.

31.

Select Hard Light from the Blending Mode menu at the top of the Layers palette.

32.

Drag the Altar layer to the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette to duplicate the layer.

33.

Select the Move tool in the toolbox and Shift-drag the Altar Copy 1 layer to the right, until the red robe is in the lower-right corner.

34.

Drag the Altar copy 1 layer to the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette, creating a new layer called Altar Copy 2.

35.

Drag the Altar Copy 2 layer to the bottom of the layer stack in the Layers palette.

36.

Highlight mask for Altar Copy 2 and click the Trash Can in the bottom right to delete the mask.

37.

Select the Marquee tool from the toolbox and drag a 40-pixel-wide vertical stripe from the upper-right corner to the lower-right corner of the image.

38.

Highlight the Madonna layer in the Layers palette.

39.

Option-click (Alt-click in Windows) the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers palette to conceal the selected area, revealing the lower Altar layer.

40.

Hide the visibility of the Madonna layer, revealing the Altar Copy 2 layer.

41.

Select the Polygonal Lasso tool from the toolbox and click the corner points of the small molding area in the lower-right corner to select it.

42.

Reactivate the visibility of the Madonna layer, click the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers palette to select it, and fill the selected area with black to add to the mask.
