E

exposure

The amount of light that enters the camera lens and strikes the film or image sensor. The components of exposure are the lens opening (aperture) and duration of light exposure (shutter speed). Exposure is a combination of light intensity and duration.

exposure compensation

Also called EV settings. An on-camera exposure compensation system that allows you to override the camera's metered exposure settings. EV settings are centered at 0, with -2, -1, +1, and +2 settings to indicate an increase or decrease from the default 0 setting. The EV settings increase or decrease exposure in 1-stop increments.

Exposure Lock feature

A method used by some digital cameras to allow an exposure reading to be registered and held while the photographer recomposes the image. The process usually involves pressing the shutter halfway to register a reading, pressing an exposure lock button to lock it in place, recomposing the scene, and taking the final image as usual.
