This document has presented the suggestion that IS researchers consider the Theory of Entrepreneurship as a framework to adopt when investigating small businesses. Much of the existing research into the use of IS by small businesses adopts a perspective more appropriate to, and in some cases based upon, large businesses. There is not sufficient consideration for the uniqueness of small business. Where these unique factors are considered, the investigation is conducted as a snapshot of a static situation. The contention of the proposal described in this document is that small business is both unique and continually evolving. Entrepreneurs engage in a creative act of initiating and growing a business and face different challenges as the entity evolves. It is incumbent upon the small business manager to appropriately employ IS to respond, where necessary, to these challenges. The proposed framework responds to this situation. The further challenge, then, is for researchers to adopt this framework and initiate projects that will further elucidate the understanding of how IS may be employed to support small business.
