In part II, we looked at a small company that adds streaming media to an existing site in order to enhance the value of the site. The scenario in this section focuses on a digital media-based business. Streaming issues such as quality, reliability, and cost have a direct effect on the bottom line in such businesses.
This part of the book describes setting up a production workstation for creating on-demand content, setting up an encoding workstation for encoding a live stream, writing server-side playlists, and using digital rights management (DRM) to protect content. A majority of businesses and organizations built around streaming media on the Internet focus on creating high-quality content, but rely on other companies to distribute the content. Therefore, we will focus on the content creation side of streaming, and explore the use of hosting services and content delivery networks (CDNs) for getting the content to an audience.
The section follows the process introduced in part II: envisioning, planning, developing, and implementing.
