Building the Production Workstation

The production workstation computer should meet the recommended system requirements for Microsoft Producer. A computer similar to the one used in the compression suite would work fine. Make sure the CPU, memory and other specifications are ample for capturing directly to a Windows Media file with a frame size of 320 x 240 or less.

The workstation used in the Fabrikam scenario will include the following additional hardware and software:

  • Flat panel display. Because a flat panel display requires less desk space, it can be located near the camera lens sight line, so it can be used in addition to the teleprompter. The display will be used primarily for working with the computer: starting and stopping the encoder, playing back recordings, setting up notes for the teleprompter, and so forth.

  • Dual-output display card. Two display adapters or a video card with dual-output options can be used to feed the desk monitor and the teleprompter monitor. With dual displays, a presenter can arrange what she sees on the teleprompter and desktop monitor by simply dragging documents and program windows between them.

  • Video capture. A video capture card is used to capture audio and video. The card should provide both analog and digital inputs, so the camcorder can be plugged into the IEEE 1394 digital connection for direct transfers, and into the S-video connector when capturing live to the computer. The composite connection could also be used to connect a VCR, for example.

  • IEEE-1394 hub. If a cable longer than 15 feet is required to reach the computer in the adjacent office, a hub can be used to bridge two cables.

  • Software. Producer and Microsoft Office programs, such as PowerPoint and Word, running on Windows XP Professional. The Office programs can be used by presenters for organizing their scripts and slides.

  • Network Interface Card (NIC). The workstation will be connected to the corporate network so presenters will be able to access material on other computers. They will also be able to copy finished projects to another workstation or publish them directly to the Media Guide site.
