Chapter 18: Phase II: Live Production

Overview

In phase I of the Fabrikam company plan to deploy Windows Media, a system was built that enabled the Media department to create on-demand content, the IT department to host the content, and end users with desktop computers to locate the content in an online Media Guide and stream it to any computer connected to the corporate network.

In phase II of the plan, the system will be extended: the Media department adds live encoding capabilities and a Producer mini-studio, and the IT department adds remote servers. At the completion of phase II, users worldwide will be able to stream on-demand content, and there will be limited live streaming at the company’s headquarters in Toronto.

In this chapter, we will see how the company adds encoding computers to the existing Media department studio. With this functionality, the studio can be used to originate live broadcasts. The Fabrikam staff will also create a Windows Media “road kit” that can be transported to any location for remote live or on-demand encoding.
