Brainstorming

Windows Media provides a robust solution for distributing pre-recorded and live video to Fabrikam employees over the company’s existing intranet. The entire Windows Media system is designed around using network resources efficiently and to deliver high-quality video to end users. With streaming media, the infrastructure and equipment are already in place; Windows Media adds value to what is already there. Windows Media would enable the company to distribute video inexpensively, efficiently, and quickly.

Fabrikam planners brainstormed other potential uses for Windows Media. The company makes heavy use of PowerPoint slides to deliver one-to-many messages in groups with live presenters. Fabrikam management was intrigued with Microsoft Producer as a means of making the presentations more widely available. Users could create their presentations, and then use Producer to record them. Then they could publish the presentations to intranet Web sites and a Windows Media server, and anyone in the company with access to a desktop computer could view the presentations on demand.

The security department saw a potential use for streaming media in facilities maintenance and security. The signals from hundreds of security cameras could be encoded and hosted on a secure site. The areas could then be monitored from any number of remote locations. The streams could also be archived, which could eventually eliminate the need for videotape.

The marketing and customer training departments saw the potential for reaching customers over the Internet, via the company’s extranet. Material could be produced internally and hosted on a Windows Media server outside the internal network. Marketing material could be aimed at attracting new customers, and training material could provide current customers with the latest safety and maintenance information.

The employee professional development department saw an easy way to train and educate employees at their desktops. Desktop instruction could eliminate much of the need for classroom-based training that required a live instructor, expensive office space, and travel time for employees. Producer could be used to capture lessons, which could then be made available to employees worldwide. Even manufacturing saw the opportunity for using video and Windows Media to study their processes.
