Problem : Solution Modify facial features

Problem : Solution Modify facial features

Problem: Subject's facial features are less than perfect.

Solution: Use the Liquify filter.

Portrait retouching is without a doubt an art form in itself. Just glancing through a magazine, you have to wonder whether there really are that many perfect people who always photograph without flaws. The perfect smile, both eyes equally open, smooth skinit's rather intimidating to the average person who on occasion might say, "Now that's a great picture of me!" Of course, with the help of Photoshop, you could potentially make every portrait taken of you or that you've taken of someone else look like pages in a magazine.

Using the Liquify filter, you can adjust facial features for amazing results. You can adjust the size of someone's nose or lips, open or enlarge her eyes, thin out her cheeks, or literally turn her frown upside down. And, if you're feeling a bit punchy, you can even make someone look a bit alien-like. Either way, this filter offers a lot of razzle-dazzle to Photoshop users, so let's tap into it.

Part by part

1.

Open a portrait to work with.

2.

Make a copy of the file to work on by choosing Image Duplicate.

3.

Name the new file and click OK. Now we're ready to perform our digital face-lift.

Adjusting the eyes

We'll begin by making adjustments to our model's right eye. As you can see in the original image, shown in our Problem image, the right eye is a bit smaller than the left eye, which detracts from the overall image.

1.

Open the Liquify dialog box by choosing Filter Liquify.

2.

Select the Zoom tool from theto filter's Toolbox and zoom in on the model's eyes.

3.

Select the Bloat tool .

4.

the Brush Size setting so it encompasses the entire eye. Leave the remaining settings at their defaults.

5.

Click directly on the eye. Continue to click until the right eye is the same size as the left eye. Don't drag the pointer; it will warp the image too much.

Reducing the nose

Next, let's reduce the model's nose a bit using the pucker tool .

1.

Select the Pucker tool from the filter's Toolbox and set the brush size so it's approximately the size of the end of the subject's nose.

2.

Click the pointer on different areas of the nose to reduce the size.

Making the mouth more defined

At this point, let's adjust the model's smile to make it a bit more pronounced. To do this, we'll have to push some pixels around.

1.

Select the Forward warp tool.

2.

Using a relatively small brush with a Brush Pressure of 25, gradually push the pixels into place. If you don't like the results a stroke created, just select the Reconstruct tool and paint over the area you want to undo. Then, try again with the Forward Warp tool.

Leaving a lasting impression

Once you start experimenting with the Liquify filter, you may find that it's pretty addictive. By reducing, enlarging, and moving pixels around, you can create a wide variety of different facial expressions. If your image isn't perfect, you can quickly make it as flawless as a magazine cover.
